LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear SSPD member,
Following the successful initiative in 1999 by our
past-president, Dr. Charles France, to organize two sessions a year,
in 2000 the SSPD also organizes two sessions. The SSPD met for the
first time at the annual meeting of the American Society for Pharmacology
and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET) (June 7) in Boston. The association
with ASPET provides an excellent forum to show the importance of
drug discrimination in pharmacology, and I am confident that the
association will prove to be a lasting one. I would like to thank
Drs. Walker, Paronis, Katz and Ator for their excellent presentations
on methodological aspects of drug discrimination, Dr. Jonathan Katz
for his help with the scientific program, and Dr. Jenny Wiley for
all her efforts to make this session possible. I would also like
to thank the sponsors for their financial support.
Our next evening session in 2000 will be at the annual
meeting of the Society for Neuroscience (November 4-9) in New Orleans.
The session is scheduled for Wednesday, November 8, from
5:30 to 9:00 p.m., and will consist of a short business meeting,
followed by oral presentations. For SSPD members who are current
on their dues, there is no fee for attending the session (members
who are not current on their dues can pay them at the session).
Nonmembers will be charged a nominal fee. Food and drink will be
provided, and there will be a cash bar. The deadline for receipt
of abstracts is September 30. The time allotted for each
presentation will depend on how many presentations are accepted;
in any event, no less that 15 min will be allowed for each speaker.
Please send abstracts to Dr. Jenny Wiley.
It you have not yet visited our web site (www.sspd.org.uk),
it continues to evolve thanks to the efforts of Ian and Dominic
Stolerman. For example, the site now contains a members list accessible
to SSPD members. I am sure that the SSPD web site will become as
indispensable to drug discrimination researchers as the drug discrimination
bibliography site already has proven to be.
I would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity
to be involved in and contribute to the organizational aspects of
our society in the year 2000, and hope you will consider submitting
a paper for presentation during the evening session at Neuroscience.
I look forward to seeing you in New Orleans.
Yours sincerely,
Wouter Koek,
Ph.D. President
