Letter from the President
Dear SSPD Member,
In my first official act as the President of the Society for Stimulus
Properties of Drugs, I would like to invite you to consider participating
in one or both of the two events that the Society will sponsor in
1999. First, SSPD will sponsor a symposium as well as a poster session
and reception at the First International Meeting of the Behavioral
Pharmacology Society and European Behavioural Pharmacology Society
in Boston, September 1-4. The SSPD-sponsored symposium and poster
session will be held on Thursday afternoon and evening, September
2. The title of the symposium is "Drug Discrimination: A Unique
Tool in Drug Discovery" and will include presentations by Drs. Ator,
Kleven, Meert and Olivier. A poster session will immediately follow
the symposium and, if the level of participation is appropriate,
will include brief presentations by poster presenters. Posters might
be arranged according to themes (e.g., drug mixtures) with 10-15
minutes dedicated to discussion and questions on each of the themes.
If you have suggestions or comments, please contact me or the Secretary/Treasurer,
Jenny Wiley. If you have not received a call for abstracts for the
BPS/EBPS Boston meeting, please contact Dr. Jack Bergman (bpharm@mclean.org)
or visit the meeting web site at http://www.hmcnet.harvard.edu/psych/boston99.
The deadline for receipt of abstracts for this meeting is April
19, 1999. Abstracts for the SSPD-sponsored symposium should be sent
to the BPS/EBPS organizers by this date. Please indicate your interest
in participating in the SSPD session.
Second, SSPD will sponsor an evening paper session at the annual
meeting of the Society for Neuroscience (October 23-28) in Miami
Beach. This session is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, October
26. Abstracts for oral presentations at this meeting should be received
no later than September 15. Please restrict abstracts to a maximum
of 1/2 page, single-spaced, 12-pt type. Send all abstracts for the
SSPD meeting in Miami Beach to me or to Jenny Wiley. Additional
information on the Society for Neuroscience meeting may be obtained
by visiting the meeting website: http://www.sfn.org/.
Last, but certainly not least, I want to thank the Past-President,
Ian Stolerman, and the previous Secretary/Treasurer, David Gauvin,
for their hard work on behalf of SSPD. The Beerse meeting was an
outstanding success and the Drug Discrimination Database is a unique
and valuable resource, thanks to the ongoing efforts of Ian (and
Jonathan). Over the past several years, David Gauvin has done an
excellent job (far beyond the call of duty!) in managing the secretarial
and financial matters of the Society. Thanks to Ian and to David.
Yours sincerely,
Charles P. France, Ph.D.
President
