Highlights of Fifth International Meeting
Co-sponsored by SSPD and EBPS, a meeting entitled "Drug discrimination
in behavioural neuroscience: Applications in drug abuse and drug
discovery research," was held August 30 - September 1, 1998 at the
Janssen research facilities in Beerse, Belgium. Over 70 participants
attended two full days of talks and posters. While all sessions
focused on drug discrimination, a variety of topics were covered,
including the use of drug discrimination in drug discovery and drug
abuse research, gender and species differences in the discriminative
stimulus effects of drugs, and effects of compound stimuli and partial
agonists as discriminative stimuli. The concluding session outlined
challenges for drug discrimination research in the new millennium.
Following the sessions, scientists adjourned to a castle to participate
in gustatory discrimination experiments with Belgian cuisine. Thank
you to Theo Meert of Janssen and the other members of the organizing
committee for their hard work in planning and hosting this meeting.
Abstracts have been published in Behavioural Pharmacology (1998;
vol. 9, suppl. 1). In addition, a special issue of Pharmacology
Biochemistry and Behavior will focus on drug discrimination research
and will include papers presented at the meeting. It is scheduled
for publication this spring.
